Recent News Reports on Sexual Violence Cases: Kudos to our law enforcement officers and prosecutors for their work to arrest and prosecute sexually violent offenders.

In Case Management, Legal Advocacy on January 9, 2011 at 10:14 pm

Recently our area has seen cases of sexual violence, rape, child sexual abuse in the news.  To highlight a few:

Spotsylvania Circuit court convicted a man of rape, forcible sodomy and object sexual penetration to a child, acts he committed for over two years.

Fredericksburg: A repeat offender, who is already on the state sex offender registry for molesting a child in the mid 90s was arrested for trying to get together with a teenage boy and distributing child pornography.

King George:  A man who repeatedly molested a young girl in 2005 has been ordered to serve 25 years in prison.

A corrections officer at the Rappahannock Regional Jail is in jail himself after being accused of molesting a 14-year-old girl.

Caroline County:  Three area men who were involved in a home invasion where two women were sexually assaulted and a man was shot in the neck with a crossbow pleaded guilty in December.

These are only the cases involving sexual violence/abuse.  I didn’t list all the other cases of violence against members of our community.  It is beginning to feel as if there is a case every time I read the paper.   More and more cases are appearing yet funds are disappearing to serve victims of violence.  I look with concern at the upcoming budget year and the statements by our state and local governments that funds will be reduced for non-profits like ours.   While there are many non-profits that serve the Fredericksburg metro area, RCASA is the only one providing the extensive services for survivors of sexual violence and abuse.   We need help from the community to serve the cases that are continuing to rise as our community grows, as more people feel comfortable and do report, as services improve.
