Signs of An Unhealthy Relationship:
Lack of Communication, Trust, Balance and Respect
Inability to Listen
Building Blocks of an Abusive Relationship:
Verbal Abuse – Name Calling, Insults or Criticism and Threats to Hurt You or Someone Close to You
Physical Abuse – Pushing, Shoving, Hitting, Intimidating
Emotional Abuse – Act Possessively, Jealousy, Controlling, Keeping You from Loved Ones, Calling and/or Texting Frequently
Sexual Abuse – Any Unwanted Kissing or Touching of Your Body and Pressing You for Sexual Contact
How To Respond To Relationship Misunderstandings:
Manage your anger in a positive non-violent way.
Problem solve by: breaking the problem down, finding possible solutions and considering likely outcomes.
Negotiate and compromise by letting others know what you need, listening to what others need, deciding not to completely have your way and finding a middle ground.
Learning to be assertive and not aggressive by: asking for what you want respectfully and clearly without threats and intimidation or physical force. Being assertive means respecting the rights of others, as well as, your own rights.
Remember that abuse escalates and rarely gets better.
