RCASA’s Art Therapy Thursday: Art Doesn’t have to be Complicated

In Advocacy, Art therapy, Sexual Assault Awareness on May 13, 2010 at 8:47 am

Art doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes individuals are afraid of that blank white piece of paper or canvas. Afraid to mess up or create something that they believe to be without worth. Art does not have to be a masterpiece comparable to VanGough or Monet. Art and art making should be judgment free. We create because we were born to, but society somehow dictates what “real” art is and what it isn’t. Art is the doodle you created in your last work meeting, art is the quilt you made, the beads you have strung, the sketch in your journal, and the quick watercolor you painted. Art doesn’t have to be complicated. Art shouldn’t produce worry or fear. Allow Art to be a part of you, to fulfill you. Recognize that your creation has worth, purely because it came from you. Let art foster growth and encourage the life in you.
